    The Des Moines Golf & Country Club is a prominent golf and country club located in West Des Moines, Iowa. It is known for its high-quality golf courses, elegant amenities, and rich history in the local community. The Des Moines Golf & Country Club was founded in 1897 and has since grown into one of the premier golf and social clubs in the region. The Club was established to provide a private, upscale environment for golf enthusiasts and their families. The Club is renowned for its two-championship golf courses, the South Course and North Course, each with its own unique and demanding layouts.

    The Assistant Superintendent aids the Golf Course Superintendent and the Director of Grounds in the leadership and execution of work schedules, maintenance programs and construction details. This person also helps direct the crew on the 18 holes that they are responsible for.

    Daily Duties and Responsibilities:

    1. Assists in planning daily work schedules.
    2. Assists 2nd assistant superintendent in the training of employees.
    3. Assists in supervision of various construction projects.
    4. Applies fertilizers and pesticides as needed.
    5. Helps prepare the course setup for daily play.
    6. Keeps informed on course starting times and special events.
    7. Assists in snow removal.
    8. Sets good examples for others to follow in job performance, work safety, equipment care, attendance and striving for efficiency.
    9. Perform other duties as assigned.

    Our assistants do get dirty during the workday. They help supervise but they also work on the golf course doing routine maintenance. Our assistants work every other weekend during the golf season. They average 125 - 150 hours of overtime per year.

    Educational Requirements

    Bachelor's or Associate Degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant/Turf Science or related field of study.

    Experience Requirements

    • Experience as Spray Technician or Crew Foreman is a bonus for this position.
    • Knowledge of golf maintenance practices
    • General knowledge of irrigation maintenance/repairs. Rainbird Cirrus is used.
    • Must demonstrate initiative and moral character.
    • Strong work ethic and personal commitment to improving/maintaining course conditions.

    Special Requirements

    Must have or be able to obtain a current Iowa Driver's License.
    Must have or be able to obtain a Iowa Pesticide Applicator's Certificate.

    Must be to work a flexible schedule that includes every other weekend and some holidays.

    JOB TITLE: ASSISTANT GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

    Reports to: Golf Course Superintendent

    Position Summary

    In collaboration with the golf course superintendent and other assistant superintendent, the assistant superintendent helps direct staff and participates in the maintenance and daily preparation of the golf course.

    Essential Job Functions:

    • Motivates and directs staff on a daily basis.
    • Trains new staff on standard operating procedures and safe operation of all equipment.
    • Assists in planning and supervising the daily set up and maintenance of all areas of golf course grounds with an emphasis on greens, tees and fairways.
    • Prepares work schedules.
    • Help plan, coordinate, and complete construction projects that improve playability.
    • Involved in all aspects of IPM and BMP programs including fertilizer and pesticide calibration and applications and daily moisture management.
    • Supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps, and in the operation, maintenance, and installation of irrigation and drainage systems.
    • Assists in personnel management and evaluation, employee’s safety, personnel, discipline and may also modify the daily work based on professional interpretation.
    • Involved in tree program that helps improve surface conditions through better air flow and more sunlight.

    Education/Certificates/Licenses/Training

    High School Diploma required. Higher Education degree in Turf Management, Agronomy or Horticulture preferred. Must obtain any required local and state licenses or certifications.

    Experience/Background/Knowledge

    Previous maintenance experience in golf operations required. A minimum of two years’ experience in the golf industry. Working knowledge of the maintenance of golf course greens, tees, and fairways.

    Skills

    Ability to communicate effectively with managers, guests and employees in one-on-one and small group situations in a fast-paced environment. Must be computer literate. Must be able to perform math computations essential for fertilizer and chemical calibrations, budgeting, and cost analysis purposes.

    Job Tasks/Duties

    • Maintains all grounds and course maintenance equipment according to the club’s / company’s turf management program with the assistance of the Superintendent.
    • Schedules, trains, supervises and evaluates all personnel assigned to department with the assistance of the Superintendent.
    • Maintains accurate work records for all personnel in the department with the assistance of the Superintendent.
    •  Supervises and/or executes all planting, fertilizing, care and removal of turf, plants, shrubs, trees and other facilities on the golf course.
    • Maintains course in proper playing condition.
    • Inspects course regularly to evaluate and recommend improvements.
    • Inspects irrigation pump station frequently to ensure safe operation.
    • Helps to ensure that entire golf maintenance facility is clean and organized (including irrigation parts room, chemical storage room, and mechanics parts room).
    • Oversees repairs of broken water lines or valves and may perform necessary repairs in an emergency.
    • Records all maintenance on course for review with the Superintendent.
    • Establishes short- and long-range plans for the golf course with the Superintendent.
    • Oversees the application of fertilizers and nutrients for the property.
    • Works closely with the Superintendent to implement the property’s safety program.
    • Ensures that chemicals, petroleum and other controlled products are used, stored and disposed of in accordance with local, state and federal regulations; maintains required records and strives to minimize the use of chemicals and petroleum products.
    • Communicates as necessary with the golf shop relating to on-course activities.
    • Attends staff and management meetings.
    • Keeps members informed about current and future maintenance activities.
    • Conducts daily facility security checks ensuring accurate inventory of equipment and keys.
    • Plans professional development and training activities for subordinates including safety training for equipment use and proper handling of fertilizers, herbicides, and all other chemicals used on course; assures that SDSs are available in convenient location.
    • Works with Superintendent to ensure proper landscaping for property outside of golf course including the clubhouse and surrounding areas.
    • Helps to coordinate applicable work with outside contractors.
    • Determines when course should be closed due to weather conditions that may damage the course if play continues.
    • Conducts other appropriate tasks assigned by the General Manager or Superintendent.
    • Helps with snow removal during winter months.

    Licenses and Special Requirements

    • Pesticide Application certification.
    • Valid driver’s license.

    Physical Demands and Work Environment

    • Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.
    • Frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
    • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
